The Four Main Types Of Shingles

by Christina Ferguson

.Shingles are the most common type of roofing, and can be made out of a variety of different materials. Each type of shingle offers a different set of benefits over each other. Understanding the differences between the four main types of shingles can help you make an educated decision about which one best fits your needs.

Asphalt Shingles

The most common type of shingles, asphalt shingles provide an affordable roofing option that is extremely easy to install and repair. Replacing damaged or lost shingles takes very little time and can be done in a matter of minutes with the right tools. Asphalt shingles also come in many different colors and styles, so they can easily match the look of your home. However, asphalt shingles do not last as long as other types of shingles, and do not hold up well under extreme weather conditions.

Fiberglass Shingles

Made out of plastic backed by fine strands of glass, fiberglass shingles provide a durable roofing option for homeowners. The main benefit of fiberglass shingles is the fact that they hold up much better under extreme weather conditions than asphalt shingles, and they are much more fire resistant. This makes them ideal for hot climates, or places that fluctuate quickly between hot and cold weather. Fiberglass shingles tend to have a slightly longer lifespan than asphalt shingles as a result.

Wood Shingles

Shingles made out of wood are not very common. Wood shingles can last longer than asphalt, and provide your home with a unique and natural look. They are environmentally friendly and able to resist high winds much better than asphalt shingles can. However, they cost much more than asphalt shingles and are also able to burn much easier than any other type of roofing material. They also require constant maintenance to ensure that they live their full lifespan, unlike other types of roofing materials.

Slate Shingles

Slate, which is a type of rock similar to shale, is an extremely durable roofing material. Slate roofs can last upwards of a hundred years and are water, fire, and mold proof, providing an almost impermeable barrier to your home. Slate shingles hold up to weather conditions much better than any other type of roofing material and will not break, crack, or fall off due to high winds, hail, or heavy snowfall. However, slate shingles are extremely expensive, costing more than any other type of available shingle. They are also very heavy and may not be viable for some buildings depending on how the roof is supported.

About Me

Having Hope For Mold Remediation

Hi! I'm Adam Burkhard. As a young lad, I never paid much attention to the cleanliness of my environment. Once my first son was born, however, I started scouring the house top to bottom to create the cleanest environment possible. Unfortunately, during that time, I uncovered a serious mold problem in my home. The problem was so bad, it caused my newborn son to develop an allergic reaction. We instantly hired professionals to remove the mold and restore our home to new. Since I was interested in the process, I followed along with each step to learn more. I want to use this site to give people hope about the ability to remove mold without a trace. It's definitely possible to restore a home after mold takes hold behind the walls or under the flooring. I hope you learn lots about mold remediation services from my site.
